Orthobiologics Q & A

What are orthobiologics?

Orthobiologics are natural substances found in your own body that promote healing and recovery. Your body is capable of repairing its own damaged tissue. However, sometimes a sports injury or condition, such as arthritis, causes more damage than your body can handle.

Dr. DeMers uses Regenexx® therapies, which rely on orthobiologics, like stem cells and platelet-rich plasma (PRP), to rebuild and repair damaged tissue. Using these advanced technologies, Dr. DeMers often finds that surgery isn’t necessary.

However, orthobiologics aren’t right for everyone. Severe injuries, such as a torn tendon, may require surgery. Dr. DeMers may also use orthobiologics in combination with surgery to encourage rapid healing.

What is platelet-rich plasma therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrated solution of platelets from your own blood. Platelets contain growth factors that kick-start your body’s natural healing process.

During a PRP treatment, Dr. DeMers draws a small amount of blood, usually from your arm. Then, she uses Regenexx’s proprietary lab processing to remove nearly all the white and red blood cells. This leaves a beautiful, amber-colored solution of PRP.

Then, Dr. DeMers uses imaging technology to guide the PRP injection into the most appropriate area. The number of injections you need will depend on your particular condition and the level of activity you wish to return to.

Many people resume activities, such as golf or swimming, within a few days or weeks, More intense activities, such as skiing or running, may take a few months.

What is stem cell therapy?

Stem cells have the unique ability to develop into many types of specialized cells. There are different types of stem cells. Dr. DeMers only uses stem cells that come from your own bone marrow.

These stem cells can turn into many types of tissue, including:

  • Bone
  • Cartilage
  • Muscle
  • Tendons
  • Ligaments

After extracting and processing your stem cells, Dr. DeMers uses image guidance to re-inject them into the area of damaged tissue. These cells can provide powerful anti-inflammatory and healing results in only one treatment. Most people notice an improvement in their condition within a matter of weeks.
